Beginning in 1938 the profile of President Thomas Jefferson has been featured on the obverse of thenickel. The reverse featured his home, Monticello. For 2004 and 2005 the design changed to feature the bicentennials of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Louisiana Purchase in the Westward Journey series. Monticello returned in 2006 along with a forward facing Jefferson on the obverse.
