Liberty Nickels, minted from 1883-1913, are sometimes referred to as the V nickel due to the V prominent on the reverse. The first few million coins struck contained only the V on the reverse and not the word CENTS which led to some con artists gold plating the coin and trying to pass it off as a $5 dollar gold piece. The U.S. Mint quickly added the word CENTS to the reverse in mid 1883.
