1943 Lincoln Steel Cent
1943 Steel Cents were produced at the U.S. Mint because of the need to devote copper to the war effort during WWII. Composition was changed from the normal 95% copper penny to a zinc coated steel. Problems soon arose with vending machines and the steel cents were prone to rust where the zinc outer layer didn't cover the edges of the penny coins completely. So in 1944 the U.S. Mint returned to the original copper compostion after developing a process to utilize spent shell casings in addition to the existing supply of copper. An interesting penny error coin was also produced. A few copper planchets of the original copper compostion were minted accidentally. Only a dozen are confirmed to exist and counterfeits have been produced so use extra caution if you think you have found one of these 1943 Copper cents and have it professionally authenticated.
