100 years since the first introduction of the Lincoln cent to the American public the lowly one cent coin still endures. For most of us it was the first coin we saw and the first coin we collected. Changed only on the reverse in 1959 from the well known Wheat penny to the Lincoln Memorial cent, 2009 marks the release of 4 new Lincoln pennies with the reverses depicting 4 eras of Lincolns life.
Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 that required the reverse of the cent to be redesigned for 2009, the 4 different Lincoln Cent reverses depict his birth and early childhood in Kentucky, the future presidents formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and finally his Presidency in Washington, D.C. These very special cents will only be minted during 2009. Proofs coins are available in 95% copper. For 2010 another reverse design willbe minted which, according to the coinage act,"shall bear an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of American as a single and united country."
So, the Lincoln Memorial reverse won't be returning, but we'll have Lincoln pennies to look forward to into the future. The 2009 issues of the Lincoln pennies are being snapped up by collectors.
