The United States coin with the longest uninterrupted run is the Lincoln Penny. From 1909-1958 it saw no changes in design. While the design remained unchanged during that time the Lincoln Wheat Cent does have some nice varieties to choose from including a composition change in 1943, during World War II, to zinc plated steel. In 1944 the Wheat Penny was returned to its original 95% copper composition. Designed by Victor D. Brenner, the Lincoln Wheat Cent design was eventually approved and released to the public for the first time on August 2nd, 1909, the 100th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.
